John McCain continued his steady fundraising progress in May, and his moderate spending allowed him to boost his cash on hand by $10 million, new financial reports show. The presumed
Republican presidential nominee took in $21.8 million for the month, up from $18.5 million in April and $15.4 million in March. The campaign spent $11.7 million in May, and ended the month with $31.6 million in the bank.
McCain's May haul pushes his total receipts to $121.9 million. That is still far behind Democratic opponent Barack Obama, who raised $272.2 million through April, but has not yet filed his May finance report. McCain's fundraising last month should help him close the cash on hand gap with Obama, however, as the Democrat continued to spend heavily to sew up the primary contest against Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Presidential campaign financial reports are due to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The Obama campaign was expected to file later today.
